The NECA Safety & Education Fund approached Sharp Architects in 2018 to help select a site for a new lineman training facility that would draw from IBEW Local 196 members throughout northern Illinois. A site was selected in Genoa, IL where it could easily be reached by members in the Chicago area as well as members as far west as the Mississippi River.
Phase 1 of the project included renovating two existing barn structures and site development for the training facility. Barn 1 was renovated into a classroom and office space. Barn 2 was renovated for storage purposes. The site development on the property included parking, grading, landscaping, and site lighting to support the training center.
